InfiNet Wireless, a leading global manufacturer and provider of carrier-grade wireless infrastructure solutions for Fixed Broadband Wireless Access (FBWA) and wireless connectivity, today announced that it has been selected by the city of Rio de Janeiro and Comtex, a leading provider of video surveillance solutions in Brazil, to deploy a high-capacity backhaul network for video surveillance and security across the city of Rio de Janeiro. With a population of an estimated 13.5 Million occupying 1182 square kilometers, Rio de Janeiro is the second largest city in Brazil and third largest metropolitan area in South America.

Comtex has been commissioned to build a next generation wireless CCTV/IP Surveillance network as part of the Brazilian government’s enhanced security programme, with the aim of delivering high-resolution video surveillance services to police and local government bodies. The State of Rio de Janeiro will utilise the new wireless infrastructure to support existing and upcoming video surveillance system deployments across 26 targeted areas of the city, with an expected completion date within 12 months for the entire project.

The Brazilian Government is making progressive investments in order to narrow the gap between the richer and poorer districts of the region as a part of the PAC Programme (Programa de Aceleração do Crescimento, or Growth Acceleration Programme), which aims to advance the quality of life and improve the overall security and personal safety of its citizens in the more deprived areas of the country.
