InfiNet Wireless Successfully Links Up Critical Communication Services In UK Prison
October 21, 2008 - Manchester UK, InfiNet Wireless EMEA Office
InfiNet Wireless, a leading global designer and manufacturer of wireless infrastructure solutions for Broadband Wireless Access, WiMAX, and Mesh networks, announced today the successful installation of wireless communication services in Her Majesty’s Prison Service in Hindley, Wigan, UK.
Her Majesty's Prison Service serves the public by keeping in custody those committed by the courts. Their duty is to look after them with humanity and help them lead law-abiding and useful lives in custody and after release.
HM Prison Hindley has a requirement to interconnect computers for the Patient Care Trust across the Hospital wings, to enable it to provide National Health Services facilities to prisoners with support provided directly by medical staff situated within the wings. The network connectivity is essential to the medical staff to access medical records and utilize the online facilities, including prisoner assessment and processing, pharmaceutical requests, email and standard network services.
InfiNet Wireless’ solution was used to connect the two building structures. Using the 36Mbps wireless solution from the InfiLINK portfolio, Invisible Link UK, the InfiNet Wireless’ System Integrator Partner for the project was able to setup the link, to operate with near line of sight conditions through 2 wire mesh fences and a steel mesh covering a 4 storey exterior stair well.
“Laying structured cabling would have been virtually impossible considering the need to traverse high security areas and disrupting the normal flow of prison life,” said James Togher of Keilder Ltd.
He continued to add, “in this specific application we had many physical obstructions to the connectivity requirement, we also had to contend with the presence of steel bars, and very fine steel mesh which can often be regarded as a natural Radio frequency killer”. “As such using Broadband Wireless Access systems from InfiNet Wireless was not only technically the better solution, it was also the most cost effective solution to provide network connectivity to the Patient Care Trust, saving the NHS and Her Majesty’s Prison Services thousands of pounds, and a disruptive logistic nightmare”
“Using our partnership with Invisible Link a wireless solution was designed and implemented that allowed the PCT to have same day deployment and connectivity with an order to delivery lead time of less than 10 working days”
“In what has become a seemingly commodity sector, the InfiLINK is a QoS specific device that is a cost-effective high-speed wireless solution that can operate at up to 300Mbps in bandwidth throughput,” added Carl Cag of Infinet, “It uses advanced security features and complex algorithms to make it highly secure and reliable, which were the two key base criteria for this application”
