Malaysian State Government Builds Wireless High Speed Network With InfiNet Wireless

CommunicAsia, Singapore June 17, 2009

The Malaysian State Government of Terengganu announced today the successful completion of Phase One of the Broadband Wireless Network Project in collaboration with InfiNet Wireless.

T@WAN, an acronym that stands for Terengganu Wireless Area Network, is an essential component of the development plan for the State of Terengganu. The State Government envisioned a state where ICT will be widely used by its people and planned to use T@WAN as a cornerstone to developing a Knowledge-based economy.

As part of the T-eG, an e-government initiative, the State Government of Terengganu had planned to use the Wireless Infrastructure to interconnect all government offices to improve its service offerings to the public and increase service efficiency. Che Abd Rani bin Mohd, the Director of Terengganu State Information Management Unit, said that the T@WAN initiative is expected to help the State Government to save hundreds of thousands of Ringgit, besides improving communication and work efficiency.

Besides interconnecting the Government Offices in the state, T@WAN also connects to Mosques, Religious Centers and the State Community Centers, Bestari.Comm and provides free Internet access to the community in the vicinity. Working with the State Department of the Ministry of Education, T@WAN also offers internet connectivity to the schools as part of an e-learning initiative.

Che Rani also said that the State Government ICT blueprint also involves having the T@WAN infrastructure to support projects like e-farm, e-siswazah, Bank Idea Terengganu and multimedia animation as part of the economic development to generate more foreign investment into the State.

The Project consists of the design and construction of a wireless infrastructure that stretches the entire state from the north in Besut to the south in Kemaman. Using high capacity radio gears and equipment from InfiNet Wireless, Nuinfra Consolidated Sdn Bhd completed the project within 11 months that includes site acquisition, site preparation, tower construction, installation, testing and commissioning of the infrastructure.

Kamal Mokrani, Vice President of Sales & Marketing, InfiNet Wireless, added that the T@WAN project is a unique initiative, being the only one of its kind in the region and possibly in the world. He added that upon successful completion of the planned Phase 2 and 3 of the project, T@WAN will become one of the largest government-initiated and government-owned wireless infrastructures in the world.

Che Abd Rani also mentioned that Phase 2 of T@WAN will connect to more rural areas in the State as the State Government escalates its plans to bridge the digital divide in the State. Hundreds of wireless radios will eventually be used to cover the entire 12,955km square area of the State.

Terengganu is situated in north-eastern Peninsular Malaysia and has a population of more than 1million people. Terengganu, a state rich in natural resources like gas and petroleum, and home to the international sailing event, the Monsoon Cup, is also a popular holiday destination.
